Margaretta to add 3 to athletic hall of fame

The Margaretta Athletic Hall of Fame will add three new members on Saturday prior to the Polar Bears' boys basketball game against Monroeville. Larry Kuns, Randy Fredrick and Troy Roth are the new additions. Margaretta will have 84 individuals and five teams in its athletic hall of fame with the addition of the new class. The hall of fame's first class was inducted in 2002. A look at the new inductees: Larry Kuns Kuns (class of 1955) earned a total of nine letters in four sports (football, basketball, baseball, tennis). The longtime member of the Margaretta Athletic Booster Club started at quarterback as a junior and senior. In basketball, he scored a then-school record 37 points in a game against Attica in 1955. Kuns went on to play football at Capital University. In 1972, he helped the booster club build the visitors' bleachers at Margaretta Stadium. He also helped erect new lights at the stadium. Kuns, a lifelong dairy farmer, died in 2015 at age 77. Randy Fredrick Fredrick (class of 1984) earned 12 total letters in four sports (football, basketball, track, baseball). He was a team captain in football and team MVP in 1983, the year the Polar Bears won their first Sandusky Bay Conference title and made the state playoffs for the first time. Fredrick was a first-team All-SBC selection and honorable mention All-Ohio. He also was a team captain in basketball and was named team MVP in 1984. He was a second-team All-SBC pick. Fredrick attended Baldwin Wallace University and played football. He served two years in the U.S. Air Force. Fredrick, who died last May at age 55, also gave back to the community as a longtime youth sports coach. Troy Roth Roth, who was hired last March as Bellevue's new superintendent, was a standout basketball coach at Margaretta. He was the boys basketball coach from 2000 to 2005 and 2008 to 2012. He compiled an overall record of 111-85. Roth's 2003-04 team won the SBC championship, the second title in school history. He was named Northwest Division III Coach of the Year that season. Roth was Margaretta's athletic director from 2001-11 and principal from 2011-15. He was superintendent at Findlay before accepting the Bellevue job.
