When could Huron's ice rink open?

HURON — Earlier this week, Huron officials gave an update on when Fabens Park's ice skating rink could open for the winter season. "The rink is up, filled with the assistance of the Huron Fire Department, and now waiting for Mother Nature to do her part," according to a city statement. So what conditions would prompt a rink ready for skating? "Mother Nature must now do her part by delivering below-freezing temperatures (no higher than 32 degrees) with little snow to produce skatable, solid ice," the city statement read. The city's "parks and rec team will continue to check the ice daily and will open the rink as soon as possible. Stay tuned." This marks the rink's second season at Fabens Park. In 2021, officials worked with a company that specializes in building temporary outdoor ice staking rinks to install one, about 100-by-60 feet in size, in Huron. Skaters can expect a similar-sized structure for 2022 into 2023 as well. Unlike in Huron, Sandusky can operate its new ice skating rink because it incorporates a synthetic system that mimics real ice but doesn't require a chiller as real ice does.
