See City Hall's art gallery

SANDUSKY — Many people asked to be a part of a recent art initiative overseen by Sandusky's government. Upon entering City Hall, 240 Columbus Ave., visitors can check out what's known as the City Hall Gallery. It marks the series' second installment with both produced by Sandusky's public arts and culture commission. Earlier this fall, the commission "put out a call for artists to display their work for approximately one year in the gallery," city chief planner Arin Blair said. "A total of 32 pieces were submitted for review." The gallery helps fulfill Sandusky's ongoing public art initiative. In short, officials identify opportunities where such visuals make sense to improve certain areas. This would include murals in and around downtown along with sculptures popping up in city parks. Supporting public art is a way for us to celebrate Sandusky and support the vibrancy of our community," Blair said. "Public art brings people together and invigorates public spaces." Regarding this gallery, it emphasizes the "commission's support for artistic expression and our goal to foster a greater appreciation for art in the community," Blair said. "City Hall is an open public space with many members of the community in these halls daily," she added. "The gallery is a chance for everyone who comes into City Hall to interact with art as part of their experience here." Blair added how this artwork on display "can also be an interpretation of how we tell our own story and showcase the city." For instance, all pieces featured play off the gallery's theme of revival with an emphasis of emergence and new beginnings. "The public arts and culture commission wanted this exhibit to celebrate Sandusky's continued renaissance and revitalization," Blair said. Among the artists whose work is or will be on display at City Hall for the coming year are/will be: • Adam Brouillette for "Bring Them Along" • Allison Pence for "Sandusky Connected" • Charlotte Lees for "Nature Trail II," "Nature Trail III," "Wetlands V," and "2 Organ Pipes" • Danielle Herrara for "Honest Abe" and "Frederick Douglass" • Jennifer Glance for "Liberty (NYC)" and "Greenfield" • Jenni Souter for "Red Popcorn Wagon," "Cedar Point, Cedar Point…My Childhood" and "Merry Go Round (our old Post Office)" • Pamela-Jeane Hatfield for "CP Sky" Check out Sandusky's 2022 public art work plan and the city's public arts and culture page at cityofsandusky.com/publicart to learn more.
