School notes: Margaretta, SCCS, Port Clinton, Bellevue, Delta Kappa Gamma scholarships

SANDUSKY • On Thursday, Dec. 8, the second Mass and mentoring day of the school year occurred for Sandusky Central Catholic School students. All students — from kindergarten through high school — attended Mass together, and older students helped younger students work on special projects. • Bryce Roth, a 2002 St. Mary Central Catholic High School graduate, spoke to teacher Steve Kohler's Teen Leadership Corps class on Nov. 29. He told students about his career path and advised them to "fall forward " and that "being uncomfortable makes us grow." Roth taught SMCC students about the tenets of servant leadership like "get to" and "flip the coin." • On Nov. 14, three Sandusky Central Catholic School students were honored by Barnes Wendling CPAs for their artwork: Lucia Farrar took first place, Avery Nimrichter finished in second place and Scarlett McCune placed third. Barnes Wendling CPAs, a Northeast Ohio accounting and business advisory firm with offices in Cleveland, Sheffield Village and Sandusky, sponsored a Thanksgiving art contest for students in four Northern Ohio elementary schools. Now in its 22nd year, students in grades second, third and fourth receive awards and prizes for the best drawing. In addition, the firm donates $500 to each school's art program. Students' artwork is hung throughout each of the firm's offices and staff vote on the top three pieces. Barnes Wendling CPAs hosted an award ceremony at each school to present the winning students with awards and prizes, including individual art supply kits and an ice cream party. CASTALIA • This past week, three Margaretta High School band students submitted audition recordings for the annual Ohio Music Education Association's District II Honors Band and were chosen to perform in the group. The selected students, and their chair placements, are: - Grace Rogers, first chair contrabass clarinet; - Sean Reardon, second chair tuba; - Kayden Moore, fifth chair euphonium. They will perform in the District 2 concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25 at Port Clinton High School. This year's band will be under the direction of Christopher Hoch, director of Ohio State University's iconic marching band. The District II Honor Band is made up of the top music students from Erie, Huron, Sandusky, Ottawa, Crawford, Seneca, Marion and Wyandot counties who are chosen from recorded auditions. • Margaretta High School students Makenzi Killian and Eli Conner won the The Daughters of The American Revolution essay contest. Both students were awarded a gift certificate from the Daughters of The American Revolution Foundation. PORT CLINTON Port Clinton Middle School's Builders Club and student council recently collected more than 200 cans of food for the local food bank and had over 100 student race participants during the annual "Two Cans for 2K" event. A new Two Cans for 2K record was set by Charlie Simpson of 7:28. "Two Cans for 2K" is a tradition at Port Clinton Middle School, where students bring in two non-perishable food items to participate in the 2K run or walk. The two groups are led by advisers Grace Mutti and Kerry Fial. The fastest girl and boy in each grade level were: Sixth grade: Isabella Adkins and Dylan Reynolds; Seventh grade: Thea Wybsinger and Grady Northrop; Eighth grade: Anaiya Parriot and Charlie Simpson. BELLEVUE • Bellevue High School students in Jennifer Stieber's physics class created roller coasters to demonstrate their knowledge of velocity, work and energy. They built a tabletop coaster that would successfully transport a marble passenger, then created a presentation to explain the physics behind it. • These Bellevue High School students were selected to perform in the 2023 Ohio Music Education Association's District II Honors Band: - Noah Englund, first chair oboe; - Maisyn Groves, seventh chair flute; - Charles Littlejohn, seventh chair trumpet; - Lucas Missler, second chair trombone; - David Neuman, first chair tenor saxophone; - Brendan Reese, third chair percussion; - Noble Zerman, fifth chair percussion. Provided photos ERIE COUNTY The Delta Lambda chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International — an worldwide organization for key women educators — recently awarded two $800 scholarships to two Erie County residents. • Sophia Matthews is a 2022 Perkins High School graduate who will attend Bowling Green State University. She plans to major in education. • Kathleen May is a 2022 Sandusky High School graduate who will attend Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She plans to major in secondary education/mathematics. Sophia and Kathleen were recognized at the Delta Lambda, Delta Kappa Gamma Founders' Day banquet in May.
