Erie County commended for stellar bookkeeping

PERKINS TWP. — Erie County officials recently received the Auditor of State Award with Distinction, meaning they spend taxpayer dollars prudently, efficiently and transparently. The award "is presented for excellence in financial reporting," said Lori Brodie, a representative with state auditor Keith Faber's office, when she attended a recent county commission meeting. Erie County's "exemplary reporting serves as the standard for clean, accountable government, representing the highest level of service to Ohioans," Brodie said. Brodie told commissioners only between 3% to 5% of governmental entities statewide qualify for the award on an annual basis. Requirements to receive an award include officials filing financial reports on time and ensuring the audit report does not contain any errors, weaknesses, deficiencies or questioned costs. Additionally, Erie County's audit didn't contain any problems related to ethics, bank reconciliations, open meetings or public records. "The commissioners were extremely gracious to Erie County's financial staff and elected officials across the county who contribute to the financial integrity of the county," according to a statement from all three commissioners. Several officials spoke highly of the recognition: • Commissioner Matt Old: Protecting Erie County tax dollars and making sure we account for every penny is a top priority. The county finance team deserves a great deal of credit. We are proud of the care they take in looking after our tax dollars. • Commissioner Pat Shenigo: I couldn't be prouder of Erie County's staff, led by administrator Hank Solowiej, for all their work that led to this award. We have an excellent financial team in departments across the county that ensure taxpayer dollars are protected. • Treasurer Caleb Stidham: Our office handles tens of millions of dollars on behalf of political subdivisions, school districts and most of Erie County's departments and agencies. This award is a testament to the tremendous commitment of our staff to the taxpayers of Erie County. We remain grateful for the privilege to serve this community and believe our taxpayers deserve a transparent and accessible government.
