Huron County issues deadline for 2023 dog tags

NORWALK — The Huron County auditor's office announced the sales times and deadlines for county dog owners to purchase or renew their dog and kennel tag licenses for 2023. Sales start on Thursday, Dec. 1, and end Tuesday, Jan. 31. Huron County requires that all dogs three months and older be licensed, and applications must be filed by Jan. 31, to avoid penalty. Dog owners can purchase or renew one-year, three-year and permanent dog licenses online for a convenience fee. Owners should be aware that longer-term licenses are non-refundable even in the event of an animal's death or if it is given to a new owner. The fee for a one-year license is $18; a three-year is $54. A permanent license is $180, and the fee for a kennel license is $90; kennel licenses can only be purchased through the Huron County auditor's office. People can help support the Huron County dog pound by paying an extra $5 on a one-year license, for a total $23, and will receive a special 2023 dog tag. That additional $5 is donated to the dog pound and will be used for animals' medical treatments. Tags and licenses purchased after the Jan. 31 deadline will be charged an $18 late fee per dog tag and $90 per kennel license. Various area outposts, where people can purchase their tags, will be available throughout the county. Licenses and tags purchased at area outposts other than the auditor's office are subject to an additional 75-cent application fee for each license purchased. Dog tags must be worn on your dog's collar and purchased from the county where your dog resides.
