Register hires new staff

SANDUSKY — Some have been around for decades. Some have only been here a short time. But a group of new additions to the Register's staff is poised to bolster the paper's award-winning staff. In the past several months, the Register has brought on two new full-time reporters, Bill Theisen and Elizabeth Keefe; a new intern, Averee Alexander; and a new part-time page designer, Felecity Havens. "We're very happy with our latest hires," said Brandon Addeo, community editor at the Register. "Their efforts help make our daily newspapers better from bolstering our local news reporting to helping build print papers readers will enjoy." Here are brief bios on the new hires: Reporter Bill Theisen Theisen Theisen, a Sandusky native and 1998 graduate of Sandusky High School, transitioned from part-time to full-time status this past summer. He serves as the newspaper's police and courts reporter. Theisen's involvement with the Register is long-standing. In the 1990s, he delivered Register newspapers. Since 2017, he's worked with the Register as a freelancer before joining as a part-time and later full-time reporter. "Bill's diligence and vast knowledge of the city of Sandusky make him an invaluable member of our team," Addeo said. "He was an obvious choice to bring on board in a full-time capacity." Residents can spot Theisen taking photographs for the paper at numerous community events. They need only look for the man with the tie-dye T-shirt and brightly colored hair. Outside work, Theisen enjoys spending time with his four small humans (nieces and nephew) and playing Minecraft. He has a paralegal associate degree from Eastern Gateway Community College. Reporter Elizabeth Keefe Keefe Keefe joined the Register as an intern in August and was recently hired to a full-time reporter position. Elizabeth, who also goes by Liz, is relatively new to Sandusky, having moved to the city from Colorado this past spring. She's working at the Register while completing college coursework through Southern New Hampshire University, pursuing a degree in communications. A writer at heart, Elizabeth has spent the past few months at the Register learning how to craft a news story, interview sources and use a news-grade digital camera. "Liz has boundless enthusiasm and has shown a great willingness to learn and grow as a journalist," Addeo said. "That attitude will take her far and we're glad to have her on board." When not in the office, Elizabeth enjoys writing poetry and spending time outside. Intern Averee Alexander Alexander Alexander, a junior at Perkins High School, is the paper's most recent intern, having started in October. She enjoys writing and is considering journalism as a possible career path. Averee has been a writer ever since she was young. She used to come up with stories, write them down and have her grandmother proofread them. Alexander said one of her inspirations to write for the Register was her cousin, the late Talon Flohr. Flohr wrote columns for the newspaper in his capacity as Sandusky's community outreach coordinator. "We're happy to be working with Averee," Addeo said. "We're always glad to work with young writers who want to learn more about the industry and develop their skills." Outside of school, Averee is active in dancing — which she's done since 3 years old — and dances at the Linda Lee Dance Studio. Page designer Felecity Havens Havens Havens joins the team that builds the Register and Norwalk Reflector newspapers each day. She's an Ohio native and a graduate of the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina and has experience in web design, graphic design, content creation and photography. "Felecity will give a boost to our team of page designers who each night work to build clean, visually appealing newspapers for our readers," Addeo said. "We're happy to be working with her." Havens takes a big interest in fashion — she started her own clothing line — and sells vintage clothing. She also enjoys organizing community events for area artists.
