Rolling out healthy treats

PERKINS TWP. — Take a bite of something sweet but also healthy. You won't feel guilty. Friends Brigette Swain and Dawn Borzon pursued a dream they've had for years and started their own business, Earthy Eatzz. Both Swain and Borzon have a sweet tooth, but they also like to eat healthy foods. Their desire to enjoy a treat and have it be healthy led them to launch the business about a year ago. "We've always made healthier options for ourselves," Borzon said. Earthy Eatzz makes sweet treats with whole foods and no refined sugar. Sweeteners they use include dates, honey and maple syrup. "We look for the best ingredients," Swain said. "What I'm passionate about is the nutrition part of it." Swain and Borzon make a variety of treats in the form of bites and bars. They are all gluten-free and dairy-free. The bites are loaded with healthy carbs, fats and fiber. They're also high in protein. Popular flavors include peanut butter chocolate chip and snickerdoodle. The bars are full of carbs, protein, vitamins and minerals. The millionaire bar — which has a shortbread crust, caramel filing and chocolate on top — is one of the most popular choices. It's essentially the healthier version of Twix candy bar, Swain said. Putting natural, healthy whole foods into your body gives you energy, Borzon said. When she eats foods that aren't so healthy, she feels the effects immediately. Earthy Eatzz started selling its protein bites at The Maca Root Juice Bar & Eatery in downtown Sandusky. They have since grown and are in a total of eight locations now. People can also find Earthy Eatzz treats at Tim Dorsey Fitness in Sandusky, Cold Creek Coffee in Castalia, Gathering Grounds and FlavorFuel in Huron and Wild Brew locations in Clyde, Oak Harbor and Terra State Community College. Added Borzon: "We started from scratch."
