Report: Man breaks into home, assaults man

SANDUSKY — A Sandusky man was jailed after allegedly breaking into a house and assaulting a resident late Wednesday night. Jacob A. Walters, 28, 1100 block Third St., is charged with felony aggravated burglary and misdemeanor assault, aggravated menacing and operating a vehicle under the influence. Walters allegedly harassed a woman and man at a downtown tavern. In order to avoid problems, the man and woman departed the bar and returned to a home in the 600 block of Thorpe Drive, according to a Sandusky police report. The woman told officers that she and the man entered the home and locked the door. Shortly after that, Walters allegedly drove his truck onto the home's lawn, exited the vehicle and began kicking the home's door. Walters was able to kick in the door and began assaulting the man, according to the report. The man told officers he defended himself and was then able to hold Walters down until police arrived. The woman showed officers video from a doorbell camera that allegedly corroborated the victims' stories up to the point Walters allegedly entered the home. After officers took Walters to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, an odor of alcohol was noted on Walters, according to the report. When a hospital worker asked Walters if he was okay, he allegedly replied, "I'm just drunk," the report states. Due to severe head injuries, no field sobriety tests were attempted. An officer offered Walters a urinalysis test, but Walters allegedly refused. After medical treatment, he was transported to Erie County Jail and incarcerated under a no-bond order. He has a plea hearing scheduled for the morning of Oct. 5.
