MILAN TWP. — Tuesdays' straight-line wind storm damaged homes, destroyed trees in Milan Village Square and shut down a popular Erie MetroParks property for the foreseeable future."At this time, The Coupling MetroPark is closed to the public as work to remove downed trees and assess overhead limbs continues," said Ethan Unzicker, the district's IT specialist who also handles public relation duties. "The majority of the trails were impassible (Wednesday morning), however, Erie MetroPark crews have been hard at work and are moving methodically through the (property)."The Coupling MetroPark in Milan Township sustained significant damage, which included downed trees, making some pathways impassable. Crews worked on Tuesday and Wednesday to make these areas safer. The Erie MetroParks property is closed until further notice.Unzicker noted his colleagues specialize in land management with them "well-equipped to deal with this kind of damage quickly."Officials avoided what could have been a catastrophic situation."There were several kayakers stranded at the bottom of the driveway near the river with their vehicles blocked by the downed trees," Unzicker said. "Erie MetroPark staff and the Erie County Sheriff's (Office) got kayakers safely to the top of the drive.
