Locals enable space launch

PERKINS TWP. — A yearslong quest to put astronauts back on the moon wouldn't be possible without vital testing that occurred in the greater Sandusky area. Saturday marks the rescheduled launch of NASA's mighty new rocket, known as Artemis 1, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Originally scheduled to occur on Monday, engineers postponed a launch, with test dummies onboard, due to several unforeseen circumstances centering on a highly explosive hydrogen leak. "This is a very complicated machine, a very complicated system, and all those things have to work, and you don't want to light the candle until it's ready to go," NASA administrator Bill Nelson said. This mission, when it does happen, will represent a monumental moment in space exploration history. It calls for humans to reach and explore the moon's surface, which last occurred in 1972 when NASA's Apollo program ended 50 years ago. Measuring 322 feet long, this spaceship is the most powerful rocket ever built by NASA. It even outmuscles the Saturn V that took the Apollo astronauts to the moon. Assuming the test-dummy flight goes well, astronauts will climb aboard for the second Artemis mission and fly around the moon and back in the near future. A two-person lunar landing could follow. The local impact For several years, between mostly from 2016 and 2020, NASA's Neil A. Armstrong Test Facility — previously known as Plum Brook and spanning multiple townships in Erie County — served as a primary testing hub for activities related to Orion, which is part of the Artemis 1 initiative. Additionally, those who live in Sandusky, Erie County and neighboring areas worked on this enormous task. Orion is the name for the crew and service modules that ride on top of the Space Launch System rocket. The crew module is where the crew sits, and the service module provides power, oxygen and other necessities for astronauts until their re-entry back to Earth. At Armsrtong, engineers previously analyzed Orion's capabilities with solar power, noise, temperatures and pyro shocks to ensure it can separate when necessary. More specifically, tests at Armstrong involved Orion going through: • Thermal vacuum testing; Armstrong houses the world's largest vacuum chamber, which determines if spacecraft can withstand extreme temperatures — ranging from minus 250 degrees to 170 degrees — found in space. "We will pull the spacecraft out of the Thermal Vacuum Chamber and reconfigure both the spacecraft instrumentation and the chamber itself," Nicole Smith, the NASA project manager overseeing Orion's testing at Armstrong, said in a 2019 Register article. • Electromagnetic interference and compatibility tests "We want to make sure all the electronics perform to their best capabilities and perform well without interfering with one another," Smith said. Data obtained through testing helps NASA personnel determine and understand Orion's effectiveness before several scheduled launches occur. Artemis 1 will be in space for 42 days. Afterward, it's scheduled to return to Armstrong for another round of testing. "All of this testing is to ensure the spacecraft systems operate as they were designed, which will ultimately lead to the success of Artemis I," Smith said. NASA officials also envision the Artemis I initiative setting a foundation for astronauts to, one day, land on Mars. None of this could happen, they said, without Armstrong's testing chambers and the subsequent work occurring at the Erie County base. The Armstrong facility was "incredibly excited to have Artemis I here," Smith said. "Personally, I am so excited, as a female engineer, to be working on the program that will take the first woman ever to the moon."
