Island police investigating death

Update, 2:30 p.m. Man's death believed to be from suicide PUT-IN-BAY — A 21-year-old man died Saturday inside a room at the Commodore Resort from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release from the Put-in-Bay police Chief Jim Kimble. Police were called by an employee of the hotel at about 4:50 p.m., the news release states, "reporting that a man was deceased in a hotel room at the Resort." "Police and EMS personnel responded to the room and found a 21-year-old male from Pennsylvania with a fatal, apparently self-inflicted, gunshot wound to his head. A handgun and ammunition were recovered from the scene," the release states. "We can confirm that the Put-in-Bay Police Department responded to the Commodore Hotel on Saturday afternoon relating to a deceased individual," police detective Sergeant Yuri R. Linetsky told the Register. "The incident is currently under investigation with the assistance of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation." Linetsky said police Chief Jim Kimble plans on issuing a news release later today. It's not known if the call for assistance at the hotel was made to 911, or made to the personal cell phone of a police officer. The Register recently learned — through records involving a 2021 state investigation on the island — that some officers take calls for assistance on their personal phones, but it is unclear how widespread the practice is or why it is allowed. Calls to police officers on their personal phones cannot be traced back to the 911 emergency line and are difficult to track for information about the nature of the call. The Register made a request for any recorded 911 emergency calls related to death on Saturday.
