PREP ROUNDUP: Vermilion keeps regular season streak intact

VERMILION — Vermilion's volleyball team won its 34th consecutive regular season match when it swept Edison to open the season on Saturday, 25-11, 25-19, 25-11. The Sailors haven't lost in the regular season since Sept. 19, 2020. Senior hitter Maddie Stout led the way with 13 kills. Gracie Starcovic, another member of the senior front line, added nine kills and eight digs. Senior middle Kaitlin Colahan had six kills. Marissa Garcia led the defending SBC Lake and district champions with 10 digs. Rachel Lapka (16 assists) and Angelique Garcia (13 assists) split setting duties and both served well, too, with Lapka totaling five aces and Garcia adding a pair. Karin Wlodarsky led Edison in defeat with five kills and 10 digs. Ella Habeck also had five kills to go along with eight digs. Natalie Leimeister and Kalli Quillen each had six assists, and Ellis Kramb (seven digs) and Taylor Moore (five digs) led the Chargers' defense. Oak Harbor 3, Genoa 0 GENOA — A new-look Oak Harbor team opened its season with a sweep against an Ottawa County rival, 25-12, 25-14, 25-6. Laney Schmidt stepped into the setter role for the Rockets and dished out 14 assists while also tallying six aces. Emma Lynch led Oak Harbor with six kills, and Reese Adkins added five kills and four aces. Jaylin Underwood and Tatum Baumgartner tied for the Rockets lead with 11 digs apiece. South Central 3, St. Mary CC 0 GREENWICH — St. Mary Central Catholic lost its season opener on the road 25-18, 25-17, 25-16. Marin Raymond dished out 18 assists for the Panthers. Mazzara Lynch led SMCC with seven kills, and Ava Fullam and Natalie Shaffrath added four kills apiece. GIRLS TENNIS Norwalk 5, Sylvania Southview 0 SYLVANIA — Norwalk advanced to the quarterfinals of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I team tournament with Saturday's sweep over host Sylvania Southview. The Truckers won all five positions in the match to improve to 6-1 on the season. At first singles, Sidney Sage won in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), as did Ana Osborn at second singles (6-1, 6-0) and Lauren Brown at third singles (6-0, 6-0). In doubles action, Maya Phillips and Kendall Hammersmith won (6-1, 6-1), while the second doubles team of Kenzie Smith and Abby Mozina also won in a sweep (6-0, 6-0). Norwalk is scheduled to play an SBC Lake Division match on Tuesday at Bellevue. With Saturday's win, the Truckers advanced to visit Toledo St. Ursula at a date to be determined. BOYS SOCCER Genoa 6, Edison 1 MILAN — The Chargers knotted the game at 1-apiece midway through the first half before the Comets scored five unanswered goals to hand Edison a season-opening loss. GIRLS SOCCER Oak Harbor 4, Toledo Central Catholic 0 OAK HARBOR — The Rockets began their season with a shutout at home in a rematch of last season's district semifinal.
