SANDUSKY — Three people, consisting of two spouses and one real estate agent, teamed up to check into the lodging business together. Anchor Bay Inn and Suites on Sandusky's west end recently debuted. It's located on Venice Road (U.S. 6) near Toft Dairy. The site — which, upon full completion, will feature 17 rooms, accommodating anywhere between two to six guests in each space — breaks up into a pair of neighboring buildings: Anchor Bay Inn and Suites East and Anchor Bay Inn and Suites West. Its ownership team spent much of 2022 transforming two rundown former businesses, the Coronado Motel and North Anglers Inn, into now state-of-the-art establishments, which provide overnight stays through Airbnb. Originally: • Derek Genzman, who runs Genzman Real Estate out of his hometown in Fremont, owned the former Coronado. He purchased the property in December. • Spouses Derek and Kristin Allison, who have experience managing Airbnb-type properties between Sandusky and southeast Michigan, owned the former North Angler Inn. The Sandusky residents purchased the property in April. "Since we were right next door to each other, we wanted to see if we could merge into a partnership, and we did that," Kristin said. Their overall private investment totals about $800,000. Though, upon asking the three business partners, their initial expenditure should pay off long-term dividends for the business and Sandusky's west end. "There is a lot of demand for this. There are no accommodations in the area like this," Kristin said. "But what's also great about it is it's in a nice central location: It's 10 minutes to downtown Sandusky and Cedar Point and only a few minutes more than that to Port Clinton," she said. Added Genzman: "Sandusky is doing a lot of good things, but, eventually, they will run out of room downtown with there only being so many historical buildings in that centralized location. It's only a matter of time before people start developing outside of downtown, and that's what we did. Over time, property values in this area will do nothing but increase." Kristin noted their business, which abuts a portion of the Sandusky Bay Pathway, greatly caters to anglers. "We are going to draw upon the historical charm that this area used to have for fishermen," she said. "We have electrical hookups, so fishermen can plug in their boats at night, and we have extended parking, so they can park their trailer easily." Inside the rooms, whether guests fish or not, they should feel right at home, Kristin said. "We have a lot of luxury amenities. We did not go baseline with this," she said.
