2 traffic crashes under investigation

FLORENCE TWP. — New details were released about two crashes in Erie County on Monday. In Florence Township Just after 2:20 p.m., the Erie County Sheriff's Office received a report that a bloodied man walked up to a woman's residence and told her he had been in an accident. When deputies arrived at the 14600 block of Ohio 113 E. in Florence Township near Birmingham, they found a single-vehicle crash. The vehicle was driven left of center, crossed the oncoming lane and crashed into a ditch. Driver Steve Chaffee, 58, Norwalk, and passenger Thomas Zellner, 62, Wakeman, were both seriously injured. Their current conditions are unknown. The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Drug use is suspected, according to Sgt. John McGlashan of the Sandusky Post. Perkins Township Around 9:40 p.m., the patrol received a call that a car traveling on Ohio 2 near Milan Road (U.S. 250) struck an object in the road and was disabled. When troopers arrived, they began looking for the debris and stumbled upon a white, 2006 Ford Ranger overturned in the median. The teen driver had been partially ejected from the vehicle. The driver was transported to Firelands hospital by Perkins Township Fire Department. It is unknown what caused the vehicle to crash in the median.
