Authorities serve warrants on gaming establishments

VERMILION — In partnership with state commission gaming agents, local law enforcement officials recently served search warrants on two Vermilion locations allegedly associated with illegal gambling. "An investigation found Jo Jo's Game Room and Mega Nites to be operating illegal slot machines and payout cash in violation of Ohio law," according to Jessica Franks, a spokeswoman with the Ohio Casino Control Commission. Franks noted no arrests were made at this time, but "Gaming equipment, cash and documents were seized as part of the operation. The commission's investigation continues." The Ohio Casino Control Commission "has the responsibility to ensure the integrity of casino gaming, sports gaming, skill-based amusement machines and fantasy contests by licensing, regulating, investigating and enforcing state laws," according to an organizational statement. A Vermilion police report dated July 27 provides more information about the incident at Jo Jo's on Liberty Avenue (U.S. 6). "The search warrant was granted after a months-long investigation into the illegal gambling occurring at this location," according to the report. "Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the Erie County prosecutor's office for review." In the report, Vermilion police noted its detective's bureau "has assisted with investigations into two other illegal bumbling businesses located within the city in the past 12 months. The report indicates authorities seized almost $49,000 from Jo Jo's.
