PREP ROUNDUP: Lakers place 2nd at season-opening tourney

NORTH BALTIMORE — Danbury's girls golf team opened the season with a second place finish at the 2022 Royal Open at Birch Run Golf Club. The Lakers, one of seven teams in the tournament, were led by Kamil Stephens' 41 in the nine-hole event. Otsego (192) was the only group to shoot better than Danbury (202). Alexis Wunder shot a 53 for Danbury. Michaela Harris and Astrid Halblaub both finished with 54s. The tournament medalist was Otsego's Elizabeth Jackson, who put up a 39. Stephens' 41 was the second-best score of the day. The finishers behind Otsego and Danbury were Elmwood (210), Gibsonburg (232), Ayersville (235) and Rossford (250). Thursday was the first day of fall high school sports competition in Ohio, with golf being the only sport allowed to get underway so far. Girls tennis competition can begin Friday. St. Paul's boys also began the season Thursday in a large tournament hosted by Mapleton. Their competition was delayed by inclement weather. Upcoming schedule The action picks up Friday. Norwalk, Oak Harbor, Margaretta and St. Mary Central Catholic will all be in action in boys golf. Perkins, Huron, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton, Danbury, SMCC, St. Paul and Margaretta will all play girls golf Friday. Norwalk, Perkins, Sandusky, Port Clinton and Vermilion open their girls tennis action with matches Friday, including the Redskins hosting the Blue Streaks. Bellevue travels to Oak Harbor for a football scrimmage. Sandusky hosts Lorain Clearview at 5:30 p.m. in the Streaks' first scrimmage of the season. There's a heavy slate of football scrimmage action Saturday, along with some tennis and golf. On Monday, Clyde hosts the Ralph Hohenstein Classic, an annual boys golf tournament at Green Hills. And girls golf's Monday action includes an SBC Shootout at Oak Harbor Golf Club that includes nine Sandusky Bay Conference teams.
