Home fire safety campaign coming to Sandusky

SANDUSKY— Fires can vanish everything that makes four walls feel like a home in just 2 minutes. But having working smoke alarms can help save lives. It is because of this reason that the American Red Cross is installing free smoke alarms through its national home fire campaign. The American Red Cross will be coming to Sandusky on Saturday to install smoke alarms in homes and educate people about what they can do to be prepared if a fire were to break out in their homes. Red Cross volunteers and the Sandusky Fire Department will visit homes in the neighborhoods between Sycamore Line and Warren Street south of Monroe Street and north of Scott Street Local volunteers are needed to help with the campaign. No experience is needed, and volunteers will be trained. Registration for volunteers begins at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of Imagine Baking, which is at the corner of Scott Street and Milan Road in Sandusky. People can also email todd.james@redcross.org. "Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of someone dying from a home fire in half, so we're joining with groups from across our community to install smoke alarms," said Todd James, the executive director of the American Red Cross' North Central Ohio chapter. "We also will be teaching people how to be safe from a home fire." The Red Cross home fire campaign strives to reduce deaths and injuries from home fires by as much as 25%. Since October 2014, the Red Cross and its thousands of campaign partners have helped save more than 1,000 lives and installed in excess of 2.3 million smoke alarms in homes across the country. The Red Cross urges people to practice escape plans and test smoke alarms.
