School notes: Port Clinton, Old House Guild of Sandusky scholarship winner

PORT CLINTON • In July, a handful of Port Clinton High School student-athletes helped out at Camp Good Grief in Port Clinton. Camp Good Grief aids children between the ages of 5 and 13 who have dealt with a loss in their life. The camp, which gives children tools to cope and heal, is offered through Stein Hospice. Most camp participants have experienced the death of a loved one like a parent, sibling or grandparent. • Two Port Clinton High School alumni recently donated school supplies to Bataan students in preschool through fifth grade for the 2022-23 school year. Siblings Beth and Steve Benko are the owners of United School Supplies, a school supply company that has successfully served hundreds of schools and tens of thousands of students, parents and teachers since they launched the company in 2017. "We grew up in a family and a community that always valued education," said Beth, who's the president of Port Clinton's school board. "We are extremely appreciative of our experiences at Port Clinton Schools and very thankful we can give a little something back to the next generation of students and teachers." The supplies will be packed, labeled by classroom and delivered to the school this summer. The supply kits will include all of the commonly requested items, like Avery durable view binders; Crayola crayons/colored pencils/washable markers; Dixon Ticonderoga pencils; Elmer's washable glue sticks; Expo dry erase markers; Fiskars non-stick scissors; Kleenex facial tissues, Pamper's baby wipes; Paper Mate pink pearl erasers; Sharpie highlighters; Sterilite plastic pencil boxes; UltraFolder heavy duty plastic 2-pocket folders; and Ziploc storage bags. "As is usually the case, you need the right tool for the job," Steve said. "We believe delivering these supplies will have a positive impact on students and their families." Recognizing that students have personal preferences, the only item families will need is a backpack or tote. If needed, the Salvation Army Tools for School program is a great resource for this particular item. Port Clinton Schools' first student day of the 2022-23 school year is Monday, Aug. 29. SANDUSKY With the conclusion of the 2021-22 school year, the Old House Guild of Sandusky awarded a $500 scholarship to William Graves, formerly of Huron. William is a Vermilion High School graduate and is a student at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, South Carolina, where he's studying architecture and carpentry. Each year, the Old House Guild of Sandusky encourages applications for this $500 award to any qualified student working toward a degree in historic preservation-related fields. The goal is to encourage the appreciation, preservation and restoration of homes and structures and to promote an interest, love and commitment within the numerous historical preservation fields.
