Rallying for Regan

PERKINS TWP. — A local family is trying to turn their tragedy into hope for others. The Neidler family will host the inaugural Rally for Regan from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the American Legion. Regan Neidler took his own life in April. Proceeds from the rally will fund a vocational scholarship in his memory and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Regan's family decided to start a memorial scholarship in his name soon after his passing, according to his sister, Shelbi Neidler. "He was very hands-on. He liked working on his truck. He wanted to pursue a career heavy equipment operator," Neidler said. About a month before his death, he achieved his dream job with Independence Excavating in Cuyahoga County. Neidler said the scholarship will go to a student who is very hard working and has a passion for working in the diesel tech field, not just someone with high grades. The family hopes to raise at least $1,000 for the first year's scholarship. Neidler said if anyone is contemplating self-harm, "just talk to someone, anyone, about anything. If you're contemplating self-harm, don't be ashamed to talk to someone." "If you are the person someone has reached out to," Neidler added, "contact the person's family or emergency personnel." She urged people not to be afraid to call 911, since self-harm is an emergency situation. In addition to the fundraising aspects of the event, there will also be information about suicide prevention for friends, families and those with thoughts of self-harm. The rally will have a 50/50 drawing and raffle baskets. T-shirts, drink koozies and window decals will be sold. The family asks that tickets be purchased at Eventbrite.com before Aug. 14. Regan Neidler's obituary reads in part, "Regan was a graduate of Perkins High School and EHOVE, receiving his diesel technician certification in 2015. Regan enjoyed anything outdoors; snowmobiling, boating, camping, four-wheeling, working with his hands, especially on big trucks, and he especially loved hanging out with his buddies. He will be remembered best for his big smile, heart of gold and infectious laugh."
