Springer welcomes Kaminski into Huron high jump royalty

HURON — Huron high jump royalty shared a few moments together Monday night. Jim Springer, a two-time state champion in the event, presented 2022 state champion Sean Kaminski with his state placard as part of Huron's track and field banquet. "Honored to be in the same company as the 2x state champ and school record holder," Kaminski wrote on Twitter. "Appreciate all the support and advice!" Springer remains the school record-holder in the event with his jump of 6 feet, 8 inches. He cleared that height at the state track and field meet in both 1988 and 1989 to win the championship both years. Both of Springer's state wins came in Class AA, the second-largest of three classes at the time. Springer was also a standout basketball player. He averaged 20.8 points per game as a senior and hit the 1,000-point milestone in the Tigers' Sandusky Bay Conference-clinching win against Perkins. Kaminski won his Division II state high jump championship on June 4 with a clearance of 6-6, which tied his PR. He wasn't the best seed going into the event after being both district and regional runner-up to Vermilion's Ayden Bath, but Kaminski was the last jumper alive at state. As part of his senior spring, Kaminski was also an SBC Bay Division champion in the high jump and earned Academic All-Ohio honors. Kaminski will enroll at Ohio State in the fall to study finance. He hopes to walk on to the Buckeyes' track and field team.
