Mayflies return in massive numbers

SANDUSKY — As mayflies hatch from under Lake Erie, their swarm is so dense they cause a blip on the weather radar. "This is the time of year where mayfly nymphs emerge from the sediments (under Lake Erie) and take flight in their adult stage," said Eric Weimer, fishery biologist supervisor with the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Mayflies have short lives once they emerge, and they are primarily here to mate. They start to hatch in early June and live through July. They have a huge impact on the lake's ecosystem, as they are an important food source for walleye. But why is there such a large population in Lake Erie? "Mayflies are really interesting creatures because they can only survive in lakes that have good habitats and good water quality," Weimer said. As the population of mayflies has increased over the past 50 years, "it's evidence that Lake Erie has been cleaned up and is in better shape." Although mayflies are harmless, they are a nuisance. While they can't be completely avoided, Weimer said the best way to deter them to some degree is to turn off exterior lights and avoid parking under street lights. Another thing to consider during the mayfly season is a slow fishing season. Walleye, white perch, yellow perch and more will feast on mayflies, making the fish less likely to be attracted to bait. "They're a really important part of living on the lake. It's a thing we have to deal with living this close to the lake," Weimer added.
