Summer Reading Challenge begins

The Huron Public Library, 333 Williams St., has announced its June programming with fun activities planned for all. This month is particularly exciting at the library with the year's Summer Reading Challenge beginning. The program started on Tuesday and ends on July 11. Adult registration began on Monday and teen, kid and preschool registration began on Tuesday. Note that the library is closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Recurring events • Summer Reading Challenge Bookmark Contest: Pick up a contest form from the library and design an ocean-themed bookmark. The contest has its own categories for preschoolers, kids, tweens and teens, and winning bookmarks will be handed out to patrons. Those interested can give a bookmark to the main circulation desk or email it to HPL44839@gmail.com by 5 p.m. on July 1. • Passive Contest: Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade are invited to learn a new passive activity during the summer learning program. The program meets on Mondays. Completing the activity can help participants win prizes. • Huron Historical Society: The Historical Society is open from 3-5 p.m. on Wednesdays. • Storytime Lite: Join in for storytime with Miss Melissa at either 10 or 11 a.m. on Wednesdays. • Preschool storytime: Each Wednesday, the library is hosting a storytime event with a special theme. Enjoy storytime, song and an ocean-themed activity at 1:30 or 3 p.m. Registration is required. • Treasure - Ocean-themed Crafternoons: Work on an ocean-themed craft from 2-4 p.m. on Wednesdays. Registration is required. June 12 • Chess with Paul Sherwood: Learn to play chess or join in a game at 1 p.m. June 13 • Socrates Cafe: Engage in philosophical discussion with others at 7 p.m. June 14 • Greater Cleveland Aquarium Virtual Visit and Ocean Craft: This program has two time slots: one at 11:30 a.m. and another at 1 p.m. Registration is required and the program is for kids in preschool through sixth grade. • Family storytime: Enjoy songs, books and more with Miss Melissa at 6:30 p.m. June 15 • Real Reads Nonfiction Book Club: This monthly book club reads and discusses nonfiction books and biographies. This month, the club is meeting at 3 p.m. and reading "The Outlaw Ocean" by Ian Urina. 3 p.m. • Life on South Bass Island All Year Around: Amy Huston talks about her life as a full-time resident on Put-in-Bay Island at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required. June 16 • Battle of the Books: Learn more about Battle of the Books in this introductory meeting at 5 p.m. The Battle of the Books competition is in September and the meeting is for interested kids in fourth through eighth grade. Registration required. • The Book Exchange Book Club: This club meets monthly to talk about popular books. This month's read is "On Tyranny" by Timothy Snyder and the club meets at 7 p.m. June 20 • Mystery Book Group: This group meets monthly to read and discuss different mystery books. This month, the group is meeting at 7 p.m. to talk about "When the Stars Go Dark" by Paula McLain. June 21 • SeaSide Sports with Coach Harrington: This program has two sessions: one for kids in kindergarten through second grade at 11:30 a.m. and another for kids in third through sixth grades at 1:30 p.m. Both programs are at Lakefront Park and require registration. • Chess with Paul Sherwood: Practice your chess or join in a chess game at 6 p.m. • Family Storytime: Read a story and join in a song with Miss Melissa at 6:30 p.m. June 22 • Euchre Night: Join in a euchre game with other community members at 7 p.m. June 23 • SeaScape Watercolor Painting: Teens and adults can make a sea-inspired painting from 4-6 p.m. Registration is required. June 25 • Dungeons and Dragons - Pirate Edition: Design a character and join in on a pirate adventure from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Pizza will be served at noon and registration is required. June 27 • Walking tour of the Old Plat Homes: Meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Lakefront Park Gazebo for a walking tour of some of Huron's oldest homes and other buildings. Registration is encouraged. • Lost Amusement Parks: Learn about old, retired amusement parks at 7 p.m. Registration is required. June 28 • Ocean Snacks: Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade can enjoy snacks at 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. Registration is required. • Family Storytime: Enjoy a storytime for the whole family at 6:30 p.m. • Encore Presentation of Commercial Fishing at South Shore Marine: Listen to lifelong Huronite Bill Scott shares his family's history in the local commercial fishing industry at 6:30 p.m. at South Shore Marine, 1611 Sawmill Parkway in Huron. Registration encouraged. June 29 • River Walk of Waterfront Business & Industry at Lakefront Park: Learn more about the different industries and businesses in Huron at 6:30 p.m. Meet at the Lakefront Park gazebo to attend. Registration is encouraged. June 30 • Presentation on "Life as a Great Lakes Merchant Marine Captain": Captain Russ Brohl shares stories about being a Miller Ferry deckhand as a child and then becoming a freight captain at 6:30 p.m. at South Shore Marine. Registration encouraged. • Shipwrecks & Archeology: The National Museum of the Great Lakes is delivering a presentation on shipwrecks and the process of an archaeologist at 7 p.m. Registration required. • Historical Society Annual Membership Meeting: This annual meeting kicks off with a presentation at 6:30 p.m. with a Meet and Mingle following at 7:30 p.m. Both events are at South Shore Marine. Refreshments will be provided.
