Roundup: local Memorial Day events

The Register will publicize local and community-based Memorial Day events open to the public. People can submit events for publication by emailing news@sanduskyregister.com. SUNDAY Sandusky • The Memorial Day Ceremony put on by the Erie County Veterans Memorial Park Committee It's scheduled for 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 265 Jackson St., Sandusky. Presiding will be committee president Mark Faust, who's also the Erie County veteran service commission representing the Vietnam Veterans of America. The event's guest speaker will be Perkins Township trustee Tim Coleman. Immediately following the ceremony, those representing the American Legion Post 83, VFW Post 2529, AMVETS Post 17 and the Marines Forever Color Guards will lead the audience across the street to Veterans Memorial Park to conclude the ceremony with the veteran organizations and their auxiliaries' placement of memorial tributes at the War Dead Monument followed by a three-volley rifle salute and "Memorial Taps." MONDAY Berlin Heights • The Berlin Heights Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast It's from 8-10:45 a.m. at the First Congregational Church, 5 E. Main St., Berlin Heights. Donations will be accepted. • Berlin Heights Parade It begins at 9 a.m. in downtown and proceeds to Riverside Cemetery. A program then begins at 9:15 a.m. The program at Memorial Drive will feature a Maxton Soviak plaque added to the War Memorial Dedication of the Maxton Soviak Flagpole. There will also be a presentation of the Maxton Soviak Ohio Flag of Honor to honor his family. Vermilion • Memorial Day in Vermilion Celebrate Memorial Day from 8:30-11 a.m. in Vermilion. Veterans dedications are at 8:30 a.m. at Exchange Park and at 9:15 a.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery. There is a parade at 10:30 a.m., starting at Liberty Avenue and ending at Victory Park. A ceremony will be at Victory with a luncheon following at Vermilion AMVETS. Perkins Township • The Sandusky Memorial Day Association Parade The event begins with a ceremony at 9 a.m. at the Ohio Veterans Home in front of the I. F. Mack Building. Immediately following the ceremony, the annual parade will occur down Milan Road (U.S. 250) and end at Oakland Cemetery. This year's grand marshal is Alan Lonz. A ceremony at Oakland Cemetery will commence after the parade has concluded, at approximately 10:30 a.m. South Bass Island • Memorial Day Ceremony with C-130 Flyover Beginning at 9 a.m., the Middle Bass Island Annual Memorial Day Ceremony will honor veterans with a C-130 flyover. All island veterans are encouraged to attend, and it's open to the public. Huron • Reading of the names for the Huron Fallen Heroes Memorial The 61 names of those from Huron will be read at 9 a.m. at the Huron Fallen Heroes Memorial at Huron Memorial Stadium. The names of those killed in action from Huron are inscribed on a 10-by-6 thick Vermont granite monument. It is located on the west end of the home stands at Huron Memorial Stadium. Norwalk • The annual Memorial Day Parade Beginning at 9:30 a.m., the parade will start at the city garage on Woodlawn Avenue and head south to Woodlawn Cemetery where a program will follow. Margaretta Township • Memorial Day Services Starting at 10 a.m., there will be a veterans presentation at the corner of Main and Water streets in Castalia. Among those participating: local Scout troops, area religious and government leaders, and there will be a performance by the Margaretta High School band. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs. Milan • Annual Community Chicken Barbecue It's scheduled from 11:30 a.m. until supplies last at Edison High School. It will be drive-thru/carry-out only. A chicken dinner costs $12 with proceeds benefiting the Rotary Club of Milan. Put-in-Bay • Salute to the Troops Throughout the day, at Perry's Victory & International Peace Memorial, the site will honor veterans.
