SBC TRACK: Stimmel leads Margaretta; Perkins boys, girls dominate

CLYDE — Kenna Stimmel anchored Margaretta's Bay Division girls 4x100-meter relay at Friday's SBC meet, then leisurely worked the infield, chatting up familiar faces, taking pics and holding on to her baton. Stimmel, one of the most accomplished athletes in Sandusky Bay Conference history, bid farewell to the league with three first-place finishes and a record in the pole vault on a warm Friday at Robert J. Bishop Stadium. "It's good to see everyone in the SBC, people I've been friends with a long time," said Stimmel, who was voted Bay Division field events MVP. Stimmel's day started with a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished in 15.02 seconds, breaking her 2021 meet record, but Oak Harbor's Amelia Mizelle was clocked in 15.01, setting a new meet record. Stimmel bounced back and dominated the 100 in 12.40 seconds. Then it was off to the pole vault, Stimmel's speciality. But she was not feeling very good. "My legs were dead and I had a migraine," she said. "I thought I was going to puke." Stimmel, the state record-holder in the pole vault, didn't clear a height at last year's SBC meet. She cleared 12 feet, 6 inches on her second try Friday, then went 13-0 and 13-6 on her first attempt at each height, setting a meet record. She missed on two attempts at 14-0 and waved to an appreciative crowd. "I like that people cheer for me," she said. "I also like that we don't stop meets for me anymore. When it's silent it's hard to concentrate. "I was happy I got one bar, let alone 13-6. Knowing I could do that in those conditions gets my confidence up." Stimmel capped her SBC career by anchoring the victorious 4x100 relay. Jana Berg, Macyn Phillips and Olivia Saylor put Stimmel in great position and she cruised in at 49.77, just off the meet record. "Our 4x100 did great today," she said. "It was nice that it wasn't a lean at the finish line." Margaretta's girls won the Bay Division title with 157 points. Huron's boys won the Bay with 185 points. In the River, Gibsonburg's girls won (112) and Hopewell-Loudon won the boys title, led by River track MVP Sherron Jones. Perkins swept the Lake boys and girls titles. The boys finished with 165.5 points and the Pirate girls led all team scorers with 189.5 points. "It feels amazing," said Perkins senior Ashlyn Legando, who was the Lake girls MVP. "Last year we tied, so it's nice to get first on our own." Legando won the Lake 100, 200, anchored the winning 4x100 relay and was on the runner-up 4x200 relay. "They made a bit of a statement," Perkins coach Shane Burrows said. "We only have six seniors (on the girls team). They've done a great job as captains." Huron's Kennedy Schlessman was the Bay girls track MVP. On the boys side, Margaretta's JT Patrick was the field MVP and Oak Harbor's Hayden Buhro was the track MVP. In the Lake, joining Legando as girls MVP was Bellevue's Kaylin Howey (field events) and boys standouts Owen Murphy (Perkins, track) and Vermilion's Ayden Bath (field events). Bath set a meet record in the high jump, clearing 6-10, and was center stage in one of the region's best hurdles rivalries with Clyde's Brady Wilson. Bath won the 110 hurdles in 14.45. Wilson was second in 14.48. Later in the 300 hurdles, Wilson got out fast and dominated, winning in a personal-best time of 39.18. "I just tried to win it to the first hurdle and keep the lead," Wilson said. "It's always good to PR." Wilson said he got a little push by running on his home track. The warm weather didn't hurt, either. "We practice here every day and I feel comfortable," he said. "I hate running in the cold. I feel like my muscles are so much more relaxed (in the heat)." Norwalk's boys had two Lake champions: Carson Bauman (pole vault, 14-4) and Ben Rothhaar (400, 49.88). Among other winners, Sandusky's Myasia Matthews cruised to victory in the Lake girls 300 hurdles after Bellevue's Ella Rucker won the 100 hurdles. Sandusky's Jyrell Johnson ran a strong last leg to lead the Blue Streaks to victory in the 4x200 relay in 1:32.24.
