What's new in Huron Township?

The top priorities for the Huron Township trustees are the safety of our residents and visitors. We take pride in our highly trained employees and emergency services which includes fire, EMS and policing. Our fire department provides services on a 24/7/365 basis with firefighter/paramedics on duty in Huron Township's new fire station addition. Since our station opened in January 2020, response times have been reduced by a minimum of five minutes. In a life-threatening situation, this is of tremendous value. At our new emergency services addition, we incorporated a substation for the Erie County Sheriff's Office. Currently, the trustees are in contract with the sheriff's office to have three extra deputies patrolling the township, allowing for quicker responses. Huron Township trustees have immense respect for Sheriff Paul Sigsworth and his deputies. It is the fiscal clerk's responsibility to carefully analyze our finances through the budgeting process and report these findings to the trustees. Our current fiscal officer, Matthew Dewey, is available to our residents to sit down and address questions or concerns. Huron Township collects a lodging tax from all township hotels and motels which helps fund our operations. We have two full-time employees with over 50 years of experience in our road department. This department manages the maintenance of 26 miles of roads, roadsides and three cemeteries. Our cemetery sexton manages the records of the three cemeteries which includes Scott Cemetery, McMillen Cemetery and Main Street Cemetery. Questions about any of the cemeteries should be directed to the road department. During the summer months, we employ seasonal help. These positions are filled by local college students that help with the mowing and general road maintenance. Annually, the trustees drive each township road to check the condition of the road edge and driving surface for budgeting purposes. In 2022, we will be resurfacing the Four Seasons Subdivision and restriping 19 miles of township roads. We also work closely with the Erie County engineering office on various projects. Huron Township has a state-certified building department that contracts with nine jurisdictions in the county for building department services. This department employs six employees with years of experience who deliver a productive operation. Along with building department's operations, the department also oversees the day-to-day operation of the township. Huron Township offers free yard waste disposal for our township residents through Barnes Compost Facility on Camp Road. In 2021, we instituted a street sweeping program that runs twice a year in our subdivisions. Huron Township continues to partner with the city of Huron on multiple projects. We are currently exploring a sidewalk project connecting the township subdivisions with the city on our east side. The township is fortunate to have various corridors and opportunities for hiking, birdwatching and canoeing through the Erie County MetroParks and State Nature Preserve. In the future, improvements are proposed to U.S. 6 (Cleveland Road West) to help alleviate the heavy summertime Cedar Point traffic. We believe this is an important project and will help lessen the congestion. As always, we encourage the residents to contact the trustees with questions or concerns.
