TENNIS: Huron blanks PC to take control in Bay Division

HURON — Huron's boys tennis team swept Port Clinton 5-0 Tuesday to take control of the SBC Bay Division. "The guys played unbelievably," said Huron's coach, Matt Weiss. "Our doubles teams did great, upsetting Port Clinton's impressive pairs." The victory raised the Tigers' record to 10-0 overall and 8-0 in the Bay. Port Clinton went into the matchup at Fabens Park coming off a win at the Fremont Doubles Tournament last Saturday. The Redskins' first and third doubles teams from the tourney represented them in the matchup against Huron. "Joey (Lenczyk), Mason Schindley and Sam Finley are stepping up with our best guy, JT Murray, out," Weiss said, referring to Murray's season-ending ankle injury. Lenczyk, Schindley and Finley have played well in Murray's absence. All three of them won their matches in two sets Tuesday. In first singles, Lenczyk faced off with Owen Auxter and won 6-4, 6-2. In second singles, the freshman Schindley impressed, dropping only one game against Eddie Fick. In third singles, Finley picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win over Port Clinton's Sam Roberts. Lenczyk and Finley are seniors. In doubles, Huron's Jared Lenczyk and Bryce Putnam defeated Grant Arnold and Colin Denno 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 while Dawson Berry and Nick Walls swept Patrick Huskey and Blake Denno 7-6 (5), 6-3. "They played us close last time, but we've improved as a team and grown closer since then," Weiss said. Port Clinton fell to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the Bay. "We moved our lineup around, and we came in with a good game plan, but Huron played excellent," Port Clinton coach Aaron Taylor said. PC will match up against Edison on Wednesday. "We're looking to lock down our second spot in the division down the stretch this season, and we'll start that against Edison," Taylor said.
