Cancer benefit on for well-liked Milan woman

BERLIN HEIGHTS — Patricia "Patty" Moyer is known as the type of person to always help others — no matter family, friends, colleagues, students or complete strangers — before herself. "She would do anything for anybody, and that's the way she's been for her entire life," said Stephanie (Moyer) Federer, one of Patty's children. "And that's why we wanted to do this for her." Federer referenced an upcoming fundraiser for Patty, as she's attempting to overcome her breast cancer diagnosis. It's set for 5 p.m. Saturday at the Berlin Heights Conservation Club. Patty — who, 18 years earlier, defeated a different type of breast cancer — recently finished her chemotherapy treatments, going through 24 rounds dating back to this past fall. All the while, she maintained as much of a normal life as possible, working in Edison High School's library, exercising at Anytime Fitness in Norwalk, going out with friends and, above all else, spending quality time with her family: husband, Dan, three children and eight grandchildren. "She is a fighter," Federer said about Patty, an Edison alumna who was born, raised and still lives in Milan. "She is strong, and she is doing everything she can to stay positive, especially for the grandkids. There are days when she's been weak. But she puts a brave face on as much as she can." Federer invites anyone who knows Patty or her family to attend the upcoming event. For $20, people can receive a full dinner and listen to live music. All proceeds from the event aim to help offset her out-of-pocket medical expenses. "Insurance is not covering everything. When it's all said and done, we are probably looking to raise about $20,000," Federer said. "I know my mom would want to thank everyone for their support," Federer added. "She gets so choked up when someone donates or says something nice about her, and that is so important in her recovery. We are and she is so thankful and grateful to the entire community of Milan and Berlin Heights and Edison (Schools) for all the support they have given her. It's helping her fight this."
