Bellevue standing strong

BELLEVUE — Bellevue is still standing strong, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Bellevue Mayor Kevin Strecker said while last year was difficult navigating the pandemic and operating changes to businesses, city hall is "living within its financial means." Strecker gave a state of the city address Thursday afternoon to community leaders during a luncheon at The Vue Banquet & Event Center. "This group of people makes this community run, they're truly to thank for the direction our municipality has taken," Strecker said. "I want to express my thanks to the Bellevue city council. It's clear that you take your roles seriously and have continued to make the city better. It's remarkable and inspiring." Strecker said the downtown area has new energy, with the addition of a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, also known as DORA, and new businesses and a new park will be installed. He said the city will also have 32 Hometown Hero banners put up around town and that applications were full. The program honors residents of the city who served in the armed services. "We're looking to add more banners for next summer," Strecker said. For Arbor Day, the city is going to be planting two trees, one to replace the former Christmas tree that had to be removed. "Our city department heads have put significant and great effort into everything they do," Strecker said. "We've made a pledge to work every day to make this city better. We're fulfilling that commitment by paving the way for a better future with the largest road repair project in city history." Strecker said the city will be dedicating $500,000 a year from now on to road improvements. During the winter months, Strecker said the street department did a great job keeping the roads clear. In 2021, the department paved 13 streets. Strecker said the city installed updates for the water treatment and the wastewater treatment plant. He said new service lines and pumps were installed. "We have the best group of employees," Strecker said. Strecker said through grants, new equipment and gear for the fire department have been purchased. "Our recreation department has been developing innovative programs and bringing new and exciting ideas to make memories for our children," he said. Strecker said he's made a point to build relationships with neighboring cities, like Norwalk, this year as well. "Things couldn't be any better. I'm happy with the way everything is going. Financially, we're probably better off than we've ever been," Strecker said. "There's a new energy in Bellevue. Our service groups and their contributions make Bellevue special.
