Russell Steven "Steve" Chick

SANDUSKY — Russell Steven "Steve" Chick passed away on March 22, 2022, in Sandusky after a fierce battle with cancer. His strength during recent medical issues was a testament to his courage and positive mind. Steve was loved by many and brought joy to friends, family, and strangers alike throughout his life as a caring, joyous spirit. Steve attended Akron University and had rewarding careers across the country, working for the Akron Beacon Journal, ceramic engineer for Laguna Clay and Cerdec, Lifecare Alliance, realtor and pottery artist. Pottery was Steve's true passion. He created many exquisite pieces, some of which are on display at Akron University. Steve was also a great showman, demonstrating the drama and beauty of the fiery Raku pottery process at his home or shop. Steve had an inquisitive mind, always learning and sharing that knowledge with others. He had a welcoming smile for all. His loss will be felt deeply by those who knew and loved him. Steve was born on Aug. 18, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio. He leaves behind his mother, Dorothy (Reams) Chick; wife, Jeannette Jennings; sons Daniel (Elizabeth) Chick and Aaron Chick; sister, Marcia Chick-Nilsen; granddaughter, Carrie Lauzon-Chick; nephew, Matthew (Heather) Nilsen; niece, Dorothy Nilsen; and grandnephew Joseph R. Humphrey. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Oakley Russell Chick and a sister, Dr. Marilyn S. Chick. "You never know which way the smoke will go!" — Steve, on life and raku.
