School notes: Sandusky, Port Clinton, EHOVE Career Center

SANDUSKY • Sanduskty middle and high school students recently traveled to Avon High School to compete in the Unified Sports Special Olympics basketball game. They had fun and made several baskets and those who stayed were able to watch a live feed of the game. • Destiney Wright, a Sandusky High School student in teacher Brad Agee's aviation program, was recently recognized at the U.S. Armed Forces Career Commitment Ceremony in Columbus as she enlisted to serve in the United States Air Force. MILAN TWP. EHOVE Career Center juniors Ronald Baum and Christina Edwards, who are enrolled in the school's culinary arts program, finished in first place for their "Up" movie-inspired cake at this year's Creative Cakes state competition. Ohio ProStart, which sponsored the competition, is a two-year high school training program developed by the National Restaurant Association Education Foundation that educates, cultivates and supports the future workforce of Ohio's food service and hospitality industry. PORT CLINTON • The following Port Clinton High School students placed at the annual DECA state competition (Career Development Conference) in Columbus on March 11 and 12: - Logan Brown took first place in the Hotel Lodging Series and qualified to travel to Atlanta, Georgia in April; - Mia Sanchez placed eighth in the state in Human Resource Management Series; - Jordan Waddell placed ninth in the Principles of Business Administration event; - Brigitte Schroeder and Jessia Waddell were finalists in their events and both placed in the top 25, taking 11th place. PCHS DECA students also participating in the state contest were Joseph Apple, Isaac Apple, Olivia Perry, Vicky Provonsha, Joaquin Turner-Heidelburg, Wyatt Siefke and Madison Wiechman. Wiechman and Sanchez will also travel to Atlanta to represent Port Clinton High School in the School-Based Enterprise event in April. Bill Hollister is Port Clinton High School's marketing instructor and DECA adviser. • Melissa Frisch's fourth-grade students at Bataan Intermediate recently received a special package from Texas. They are participating in the Environment Box Exchange, where a teacher in another part of the United States works with students to collect samples of nature that are reflective of the area. During the project's process, students prepare reports, create artwork, write poetry and prepare nature samples in a format to be shared. Frisch's classroom is exchanging environmental material with students attending Mildred Independent School District in Corsicana, Texas. Students enjoyed opening the environmental box with various leaves, flowers and especially some huge pine cones. They compared climate and then made a list of items unique to Ohio they can collect. As the weather changes, Frisch and students will begin collecting materials to send to Texas.
