Fifth Fleet triumphs | Sandusky Register 75 years ago, 1944: Admiral Chester W. Nimitz announced today that the U.S. Fifth fleet had won one of the greatest triumphs of the war by defeating the Japanese fleet in a battle off the Philippines in which 14 Japanese major units were sunk or damaged.
