Red Cross offers fire safety tips

SANDUSKY — The American Red Cross provided assistance to six Sandusky residents over the weekend after three separate house fires damaged residencies. According to a press release from the American Red Cross, the organization provided lodging, clothing and food to five adults and one child after a string of house fires in the city. The release included a few safety reminders for homeowners to prevent a blaze. Installing smoke alarms is first. A smoke detector should be on every level. They should be placed inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. They need to be tested every month, and the batteries should be replaced every year. The American Red Cross also encourages residents to make a fire evacuation plan. Plan to have two ways to get out of every room and consider purchasing an escape ladder for upstairs bedrooms. Discussing the plan with family members, pick a spot outside where everyone can meet. It's even a good idea to practice to evacuation process at different times of the day and night.
