School leader steps up to lead area district

CLYDE — An experienced Ottawa County school official stepped up to lead another district during a transition period. Clyde-Green Springs Schools board members recently hired Port Clinton Schools superintendent Pat Adkins to be the district's interim leader. Adkins will serve both roles in a dual capacity. In other words, as he helps out Clyde, he'll remain Port Clinton's superintendent. Former superintendent Dennis Haft, who led Clyde-Green Springs Schools for almost six years, left to become the state coordinator for the Ohio Department of Education's High Schools that Work program in Columbus. He submitted his resignation in January. The national program seeks "to improve how high school students are prepared for work, careers and further education by enhancing curriculum and instruction at high school and middle-grade levels," according to the state education department's website. Adkins, who's in his 18th year leading Port Clinton Schools, said it's his first time serving in this temporary leadership role. "I did reach out and express a willingness to help," he said. "Our area currently has seven superintendent openings and finding certified interim superintendents is very difficult. With the short time frame, I felt it was something I could help with. "I have grown increasingly concerned about the future of our profession and the toll the past few years have taken on teachers, administrators and superintendents," Adkins said. "I am passionate about being an advocate for our profession and willing to help where I can." Adkins and Joe Letterhos, Clyde-Green Springs Schools' curriculum director who was promoted to interim assistant superintendent by board members, will share operational duties. "Mr. Letterhos will handle the day-to-day operations, and I will be available to assist when and where necessary," Adkins said. Right now, Adkins expects to be in Clyde once a week and be available on weekends and evenings. He'll serve as interim superintendent until May 1 or until board members hire a successor. North Point Educational Service Center, which provides staffing, services and more to area school districts, including Clyde-Green Springs Schools, is helping Clyde-Green Springs officials look for a new leader. Other area school districts searching for superintendents include Huron, Sandusky and Western Reserve schools. - Appreciate news from your community? Click here to subscribe to the Register. -
