Support Easterseals Register file photo/ERIN CALDWELL The weather forecast is cold and gray for Saturday, so it's a perfect day to visit the Sandusky Mall and support Easterseals. The annual Easterseals auction, co-sponsored by the Register and local radio station WLEC starts at 10 a.m. and runs to 6 p.m. in the mall's main concourse. Easterseals has been doing good works for more than 100 years and there are great gifts on which to bid. Earsterseals has a variety of programs helping adults and children with disabilities and also provides services, like home care, to area seniors. You can also view auction items and bid online at easterseals2022.givesmart.com. Easterseals debuted the online bidding last year, which organizers said was a big success. Knock 'em down Register photo/ANDY OURIEL Here we go again. The city of Sandusky slated another six structures to be demolished and we're mentioning again how much we like it when this happens. It wasn't that long ago that there were more than 200 such buildings and no plan of attack to clean up the city. Every time the wrecking ball hits a blighted property it's a good thing. Tempus Fugit Jean Holzaepfel The area lost two icons this week: Jean Holzaepfel and Richard "Dick" Speir. Holzaepfel, 97, and her husband, "Hank," owned the sporting goods and photography store of the same name in downtown Sandusky for many years. Jean and Hank were involved in many civic activities and she was the first chairperson of the Lange Trust, which supports expanding arts and theater to the widest audience possible. Speir, 95, taught in the Sandusky Schools for more than 66 years. He was the first director of the Sidney Frohman Planetarium at Sandusky High School, and only recently retired from those responsibilities.
