Western Reserve sixth in final AP state poll

COLUMBUS — The state level ramifications from Saturday's undefeated non-league showdown in Collins are in.Unbeaten Tiffin Calvert and Western Reserve met in a previously unscheduled game on Saturday, with the Senecas finishing 22-0 with the 50-41 win over the Roughriders (20-1).In a close vote, the 'Riders fell from second to sixth in the final Associated Press state poll, released on Monday. Western finished just three points out of fourth place, as Colonel Crawford (22-0) finished No. 1 ahead of Ottawa-Glandorf (20-2), Versailles (20-1), Columbus Africentric (17-5), Haviland Wayne Trace (20-2) and the 'Riders.Meanwhile, the Senecas (22-0) moved up one spot from No. 2 and finish as co-poll champions with defending state champion Botkins (20-2) in Div. IV.The Roughriders debuted at No. 8 in the first poll, then moved up to fourth. They climbed one more spot on Jan. 24 to No. 3, where it remained in the sixth edition prior to moving up a spot to No. 2 on Feb. 14.Crawford (20-0) moved into the No. 1 spot in the poll on Jan. 24 and remained there for the final four weeks.Crawford and Western Reserve are the also the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the same district, which will be played at Norwalk High School. The Eagles are coached by Dave Sheldon, the brother of Western head coach Chris Sheldon.Western Reserve defeated New London by a 75-24 score on Feb. 18 to win its 20th straight game before the loss to Calvert. That tied the program record for the longest win streak with the 2003-04 team. It was also the best start to a regular season, and the most wins in a regular season in Western's program history.The only program to win five consecutive Firelands Conference championships (2018-22), the 'Riders also saw their 39-game win streak at home snapped in the setback to the Senecas, who capped their second-ever unbeaten regular season.Also of note to the area, Margaretta (19-3) finished 10th in Div. IV.
