PREP ROUNDUP: PC's Wallace wins girls wrestling district title; Huron girls reach 15 wins

MARYSVILLE — Port Clinton's Cadence Wallace, ranked No. 2 in the state at 130 pounds, won by fall at 3:05 in the girls wrestling district championship match at Marysville High School on Saturday. Wallace trailed 2-0 in the final to Defiance Tinora's Makenna Helmke but didn't let Helmke score again. Wallace won her earlier two matches on the day, first via fall after 46 seconds and then by a 15-4 majority decision. The Northwest District championships are put on by the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association. Four wrestlers from each weight class advance to next weekend's state meet. PC's Gracie Rohrer, No. 7 in the state at 135, fell in her final by fall after 5:24. She was defeated by Liberty Center's Alexus Shaneyfelt, the No. 2 wrestler in the state. In a small bracket, Rohrer had won by fall after 2:29 to advance to the final. Port Clinton's Olivia Perry also finished runner-up in district, losing by fall in the 170-pound final to Ridgeville's Nya Miller. The 9th ranked wrestler in the state, Perry won by fall after 4:39 and then by 8-4 decision to reach the final. PC's Mya Reeves didn't compete in the district final at 145 pounds, but she advanced to state by making it to the third-place match. Reeves won by fall after 1:44 in the consolation semifinal, punching her ticket to next weekend's state meet. She lost by fall after 1:27 in the third-place match to come in fourth. Vermilion's Lauren Ficker will also be heading to the state meet. The sophomore, wrestling at 100 pounds, pinned her first opponent in just 27 seconds, but she lost her next match to set up a win-or-go home scenario. Ficker needed one more victory to ensure a spot at state, and she picked it up with another quick pin, this time after 29 seconds. Ficker won once more via forfeit to place third. Wallace, Rohrer, Perry, Reeves and Ficker will wrestle at Hilliard Davidson High School in the state meet on Feb. 19-20. Bellevue second by a point at Rossford ROSSFORD — Bellevue's wrestling team finished with 172.5 team points on Saturday at Rossford, finishing just shy of first-place Toledo Whitmer at 173.5. Oak Harbor came in fourth with 152 points. Bellevue won the two heaviest weight classes, 215 and 285. Evan Straub won by pin at 4:29 in the 215-pound final, following up his recent 100th career win with a strong showing. Brock Nunez won by pin at 4:22 at 285. The Rockets had winners at 144 and 150. Cade Peterson defeated Bellevue's Justin Smythe by 3-1 decision at 144, and Hayden Buhro won a 9-1 majority decision at 150. GIRLS BASKETBALL Huron 50, Oak Harbor 38 OAK HARBOR — Huron closed out its best girls basketball regular season in two decades with a 50-38 win at Oak Harbor. The Tigers finished 15-5 overall and 8-2 in the SBC Bay Division. Mia Hurst led the Tigers with 12 points, Ava Winnestaffer added 11 and Jess Holsapple and Rae Roldan each scored nine.
