PREP ROUNDUP: Sandusky comes back for road win

ASHLAND — Sandusky's girls basketball team pulled out a 43-42 win on the road at Ashland on Wednesday night. The Blue Streaks were led by three players with 10 points apiece — Quincy Burchett, RaKiya Collier and Emerie Morgan. Ashland dominated the third quarter, and Sandusky (2-11) trailed by five points heading to the final frame and fell behind by as much as seven. The deficit was still five with three minutes to play. "We had to put the press on, and that's how we got back in," Sandusky coach Richard Koonce said via phone after the game. Morgan scored eight of Sandusky's 14 fourth-quarter points to help secure the win. "(Morgan) was key," Koonce said. "She played well down the stretch. Emerie, Quincy Burchett, they got some steals and pushed the ball ahead." Ashland had a shot at the buzzer to win the game, but it missed. Sandusky was playing without Myasia Matthews, who "wasn't feeling well" on Tuesday, Koonce said, and the Blue Streaks responded by having three players in double figures for the first time this season. "Did a good job, didn't give up," Koonce added. "I was proud of them, told them that was an excellent way to start the second half of the year." The Blue Streaks are now 2-11 on the season. Sandusky returns to action in Vermilion on Saturday. The Lady Red had five players finish in double figures, led by freshman Hailey Rees, who scored 19. Emma Bollinger had 16, Brynn Vogel added 11 and both Dominique Weisz and Molly Foos scored 10. The Lady Red improved to 10-3 on the season with the victory. They're back in action on Saturday at Perkins in a game that could decide the SBC Lake Division title. The Pirates won both of their matches, winning 73-0 over Norwalk before pulling out a tighter 43-32 decision over Bellevue. Wyatt Nemitz closed out the win over the Redmen with a fall after 3:46. Nemitz won both of his matches at 126 pounds on the evening. Collin Calderon and Keegan Schoen each won a pair of matches for the Pirates, as well. Clyde and Bellevue faced off in their opening match, and the Fliers won, 40-33. Also on Wednesday night, St. Mary Central Catholic wrestled against Port Clinton and Oregon Clay at PC. SMCC had two wrestlers go 2-0, Alec Lentz and Anthony Stanford. Bowling Sandusky sweeps Port Clinton SANDUSKY — Both Sandusky bowling teams improved to 10-2 on the season with wins over Port Clinton at Cedar Lanes. The Blue Streaks girls beat PC, 2555-2347. Shania Rohrbacher led Sandusky with a 393 series (184-209), and senior captain Taylor Scroggy added 184-149 for a 333 series. Port Clinton was led by Asta Strader (171-203 for a 374 series). Sandusky's boys won 2,760 to 2,502. Zach Sennish rolled a 246 followed by a 215 for a 461 series. Hunter Maxwell added a 405 series. Riley Barnett led PC with a 409 series.
