Sandusky's graduation rate reaches new record

SANDUSKY — Sandusky High School's graduation rate is the best it's ever been. Officials recently learned this year's four-year graduation rate increased to 94%, a new record. The rate has steadily improved since 2016, when the rate was 76%, state data shows. Only about 3% of Ohio public high schools have accomplished this, officials said. "Our team works very hard to ensure that each student at Sandusky High School has a viable plan to receive their diploma each year," principal Eric Talbot said. "Our teachers in the classrooms are the primary reason for this success." The school district said its success comes from several initiatives, like student goal-setting, emphasis on state testing, the Senior Parent Summit, the Edmentum credit recovery system and offering help through the Digital Learning Center led by coordinator Sherry Smith. In Sandusky Schools' almost 170-year history, the 94% rate is a notable milestone. "Mr. Talbot and his team at Sandusky High School have continued to work hard to improve our graduation rate," superintendent Eugene Sanders said. "The continued growth of the graduation rate proves that our initiatives and programs, like the Sandusky Digital Learning Center, are making a difference with our students. We are certain this hard work will continue for years to come." Since 2016, Sandusky High School's four-year graduation rate has made consistent increases each year. The largest growth occurred between 2016 and 2017 when it climbed to 83% and between 2018 and 2019 when it jumped from 86% to 92%, according to the Ohio Department of Education.
