Stay safe around cold water

The Coast Guard is asking residents to practice caution around Lake Erie this winter, stressing that cold water can kill quickly. Weather veterans and water novices should both be mindful and prepared while near the water in cold conditions, according to a press release from the Coast Guard. Active monitoring of the weather before and during boating trips is imperative in erratic weather conditions. Falling into freezing water without survival gear can turn deadly fast. A person may experience a "deadly gasp reflex", an initial drop into frigid water causes a person to gasp which can quickly lead to drowning, the release states. After surviving the gasp reflex, a submerged person has 1 minute to control breathing and 10 minutes of body function. Boaters should wear a dry suit with flotation capabilities, as well as sweat-wicking garments to prevent body heat from escaping. Bright-colored clothing can expedite the rescue process in the event of a fall. The Coast Guard recommends bringing these survival tools on all excursions on the water: • Whistle • Waterproof VHF-FM radio • Personal locating beacon • Ice awls, useful for self-rescue "Maintaining the body's core temperature is critical to survival, and preparation is how you do that when exposed to extreme elements," said Lt. Jeremiah Schiessel, a public affairs officer with the agency. "It could mean the difference between going home that evening to enjoy a pleasant dinner with loved ones or an extremely difficult fight for survival."
