(3:45 p.m. update) 1 dead in Huron boat crash

UPDATE (3:45 p.m. Wednesday) BERLIN TWP. — A boat collision on Tuesday night left one person dead. Meanwhile, another victim remains missing as of late Wednesday. Two others involved in the incident received treatment at the hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injuries. Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, a good Samaritan called in a two-vessel boat crash, involving four people, taking place in an area near Cranberry Creek in Huron. It's not known how the boats collided with one another. Both of the vessels involved have been salvaged. One of the boats was nearly fully submerged by the time rescue teams arrived, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Greg Shell. The other vessel was tied to another boat. The survivors pulled from the water were reported to have suffered back injuries and showed signs of hypothermia, Shell said. Throughout late Tuesday and early Wednesday, rescue teams, including a helicopter from the station's Detroit base, arrived at the scene to assist in searching for the missing person. Air and water teams continued to search through the night and into the morning. Late Wednesday morning, however, Coast Guard rescue teams suspended the search for the missing person. Crews are still standing by, on land, in the event any new developments occur. Officials said they won't release any names until 24 hours after immediate family members have been notified. The scene shocked many, including Milena Ladlee, who was driving home when she saw two emergency flares light up the night sky. "I thought it was a firework at first," Ladlee said. "My heart sank when I realized it was possibly a flare." Ladlee said her husband ran to the shore and made the call when they saw the second flare. Ladlee said, within 10 minutes, first responders had reached the scene. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation. The Lucas County coroner will identify the body.
