Cops: Man rams car into ex's vehicle

SANDUSKY — A Sandusky man was arrested after he intentionally rammed his vehicle into his ex-wife's car, according to a report. Forest Drive resident Joseph A. Akers, 50, allegedly committed six criminal offenses, including two felonies, Monday evening after the dissolution of his marriage. Just before 7 p.m., police arrived on Center Street and spoke with a newly divorced woman who told them her ex-husband, Akers, had wrecked her car. The woman said Akers was "out of control" and had struck her vehicle with his car multiple times, pushing it up onto the curb, a police report states. While talking to police, the woman exclaimed "That's the car," as Akers car pulled up to the residence, the report states. An officer approached the car, however, Akers only continued to pull forward. According to the report, Akers refused to stop and continued down Center street. The officer ran to his cruiser and followed Akers with the lights and sirens on. Akers turned onto Hayes Avenue, according to the report. He didn't stop until reaching the intersection of Decatur Street and Hayes Avenue (Ohio 4). More officers responded to the scene, and Akers was ordered at gunpoint to show his hands. Officers opened the car door and told Akers to lay on the ground, according to the report, Akers did not reply, And officers took ahold of Akers wrists, securing and cuffing him. Akers was taken to the hospital and cleared before being booked in the Erie County Jail. Akers' ex-wife told the police they had a court hearing earlier that day, finalizing the dissolution of their divorce. The woman told police Akers would drive around the block, hit her car and drive around the block again. She said it happened seven times before the police arrived. Akers was charged with a felony-level menacing and retaliation charges. He also received the following misdemeanors: criminal damaging, resisting arrest, reckless operation and fleeing and eluding. As of late Tuesday, Akers remains locked up at Erie County Jail on a no-bond order.
