Wimmer a big winner on Election Day

HURON TWP. — As a longtime local law enforcement officer, the most important lesson Ed Wimmer learned was listening to people. "It's so important to get out there and talk with the citizens and hear what they have to say so that you can better understand their needs and wants," said Wimmer, who put in nearly 30 years as a deputy with the Erie County Sheriff's Office. His cop-based career started in 1992. Even after retiring in 2019, Wimmer still provides public service, working as a grounds maintenance supervisor at BGSU Firelands. "By (listening), I could do my job to the best of my abilities," Wimmer said. "I have enjoyed working for the people, and I still want to do that." His dedication to public service not only continued, based on Election Day's outcome, but morphed into a completely new role for himself. Wimmer represented the second-leading vote-getter in a three-person race for township trustee, receiving 32% of this contest's total vote share, according to unofficial results. His four-year term begins in January when he'll serve alongside incumbents Gordon Hahn and Mary K. Schlessman, who also won on Tuesday. "It is so awesome and unbelievable. I'm very happy, and I was surprised at the result. It's great the citizens of Huron Township and the city have that trust in me," said Wimmer, who never before ran for public office. "And I'm very thankful." Wimmer's campaign began this past summer, launching his personal political efforts at River Fest. "I was in the parade, and I wanted to get my name out there." Shortly thereafter, he posted about 300 signs all across the township and began talking with constituents about his platforms, issues and ideas for improvement. "But I also listened to what the people wanted," Wimmer said. "I think what I want and what the residents of Huron Township want is the same thing: I just want to do what's best for the community, and I believe I can do that with my background." Among his priorities, Wimmer wants to ensure fiscal responsibility, provide the fire department with necessary resources and maintain or enhance relationships with neighboring agencies. This would include continued cooperation between his new employer, Huron Township, and his former one, the Erie County Sheriff's Office. "I look forward to working to the best of my abilities to make Huron Township a great place to live, work and encourage businesses to invest," Wimmer said.
