Bellevue parks levy approved

BELLEVUE — Voters approved a levy for Bellevue's parks and recreation services, according to unofficial results from Tuesday's election, ensuring the department's continual success. The 1-mill renewal levy, which won't increase taxes, covers operation and maintenance costs for recreation facilities and city parks. Recreation director Amy Palsa expressed her sincere appreciation for the community's constant backing. "They've always been very supportive of what we do and understand the importance of parks and recreation in our community," Palsa said. "This keeps us operating every day." Mayor Kevin Strecker said the recreation department serves the community in many ways. "I was using the recreational facilities back in 1969, and I've used it my entire life," Strecker said. "Amy's trying to branch off and does other things other than just athletics, and I really commend her for the job that she's done out there." The recreation department hosted 10 weeks of summer camp this year, a first, and also put on a back-to-school bash for local families. "In the past, we would have one or two summer camps, but, this year, we did 10 weeks, and the public really responded well," Palsa said. "We filled up most of the spots for each camp. The back-to-school bash was a really fun, family event new this year." Bellevue also has a community center with a fitness center, gym, youth sports, an indoor jungle gym for children, a center for baseball and gymnastics and an outdoor pool. Palsa said there are also 11 parks in the city. "We recently implemented Nerf wars for the wintertime, and kids can bring their Nerf guns, and we set obstacle courses in the gym," Palsa said. "That's been a big hit." Strecker said in the near future, discussions will need to start concerning improving or replacing the recreation facilities. "Our rec centers are in dire need," Strecker said. "Our recreation has something for anybody. It's not just baseball or basketball. It's huge to the city of Bellevue." Strecker said Palsa and her staff are always thinking of the community. "Her staff is always thinking about something," Strecker said. "They serve the community."
