PREP ROUNDUP: Edison's Keyser, Vogus bound for state tennis tourney

PORT CLINTON — Edison's doubles pairing of Torri Keyser and Alli Vogus will be heading to the state girls tennis tournament. They will be the first doubles partnership to represent the Chargers at state. "Just very excited," Edison coach Ryan Meredith said. "On our way back, we buzzed around the square blowing the horn... It's a great way to come to the end of the season." Keyser, a senior, and Vogus, a junior, won their first two matches at the district tournament Wednesday at Port Clinton's tennis courts. That advanced them to the district semifinal round, which will be played Saturday at PC. More importantly, the final four pairs standing in the Northwest District advance to state, which is held in Mason on Oct. 22 and 23. Keyser and Vogus made it to this point by winning the sectional tournament in Shelby, which earned them the top seed for the district tournament. The Edison duo beat a pair from Bryan (6-2, 6-2) in Wednesday's first round before beating a Lima Central Catholic pairing (6-3, 6-3) to punch their state tournament ticket. "They had some games going back and forth, quite a few going to deuce and ad and back and forth," Meredith said. "They started tightening up in that second set (against Lima CC) especially... Just trying to get them to play their game, have some fun." For most of the regular season, Vogus played first singles for the Chargers with Keyser slotting in at second singles. They both went 17-0 in singles competition and were SBC champions at first and second singles, respectively. But they teamed up for doubles at a few early-season doubles tournaments, and Vogus and Keyser eyed this postseason path from the start of the season onward. They played first doubles against Willard to close the regular season with a victory, and they've carried that momentum into postseason success. "They're good friends, and I think that always helps on a doubles team," Meredith said. "... This is what they set out to do." Keyser and Vogus will return to Port Clinton on Saturday to play two matches to determine seeds coming out of the Northwest District. The better they play Saturday, the more they'll help their path at the state tournament. Regardless, they'll prepare next week to head south and give Edison a representative at the state tournament for a second consecutive year. Jayla Medina, who went as a singles player in 2020, was the first Chargers girls tennis player to make state. Keyser and Vogus are up next. "This was one of their goals was to play together at the end of the year," Meredith said. Clyde's Kristen Harrah and Becca Clapp won their first match at district, defeating Celina's Whitney Jones and Kaylyn Saunders 6-3, 6-1. The Fliers were eliminated in the quarterfinals, falling 6-0, 6-1 to Toledo Central Catholic's Bella and Lucia Spinazze. Norwalk's Dezi Hernandez and Megan Miller won their first-round match in a tight 6-2, 6-7 (2), 6-4 decision over Shawnee's Ava Patel and Cara DeBrosse. The Truckers team fell to a Bryan entry 6-3, 6-0 in the quarters. Both Port Clinton doubles teams lost in the first round. Olivia Eickert and Reagan Ruthsatz fell 6-1, 6-3 to a team from Lima Central Catholic while Arielle Montowski and Paige Reineck lost 6-1, 6-0 to a team from Lima Bath. All three area singles qualifiers lost in the first round: Lorelei Huber (Ottawa Hills) def. Ashley Schiller (Oak Harbor) 6-0, 6-2; Catherlne Rhegness (Ottawa Hills) def. Hailey Bahnsen (SMCC) 6-0, 6-0; Kaitlyn Posey (Bryan) def. Sophia Flemister (Vermilion) 6-4, 6-3 GIRLS SOCCER Perkins 1, Shelby 0 PERKINS TWP. — Sophia Ralofsky scored the only goal of the match to lift Perkins past Shelby on the Pirates' Senior Night. Peyton Klein had an assist on the goal, which came with 7:13 to play in the game. Among the seniors honored was Grace Cisman. Her step-sister Kaylee Swanson, who was a standout player on Perkins' first girls soccer team and a 2004 PHS graduate, traveled from Pennsylvania to surprise the Pirates standout. The Pirates (11-2-3) finish the regular season at 5 p.m. Thursday at Edison. Norwalk 3, Huron 2 HURON -- Norwalk scored a late goal to defeat Huron 3-2. Jadyn Towns scored both goals for the Tigers, the first off an assist from Emily Franks. Edison 12, Lorain 1 EDISON — Abigail Hearing and Megan Coleman scored hat tricks to lead Edison to a 12-1 win over Lorain at Bolt Field. Rachel Frederick added two goals for the Chargers (6-6-1). Alaina Keegan, Morgan Moon, Alyssa Rice and Haley Chaput each scored one goal. BOYS SOCCER Edison 1, Willard 0 WILLARD — Garrrett McQuillen scored to help Edison defeat Willard 1-0 in SBC Bay Division play. The Chargers (10-3-2, 7-2-1 Bay) close out the regular season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Norwalk. BOYS GOLF Norwalk's Minor shoots 82 at district SHAWNEE — Ian Minor was the area's lone representative at the Division I Northwest District boys golf tournament at Shawnee Country Club. The senior shot an 82, putting up matching 41s across the front and back nine. Minor finished 22nd in the 60-golfer field. Ashland's Tyler Sabo was medalist with a 72. Minor's Truckers golf career ends with the district tournament appearance and a spot on the All-SBC Lake Division first team.
