Man charged with murder

SANDUSKY — Police arrested a man on Friday in connection to the killing of a Norwalk resident who was found with wounds from a gunshot and an apparent dog attack. Brian C. Lewis, 35, is charged with murder in connection to the death of Branden D. Murphy, 28, who was found lying on the road near Lewis' home on Polk Street. Just after 1 p.m., Sandusky police were called to Hayes Avenue and Polk Street after they received reports of an injured man on the road. Lewis was not there when officers arrived. The Norwalk man was taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries, Sandusky police Chief Jared Oliver told the Register. The Polk Street house was lined in police tape Friday as police investigated the incident. Several Sandusky police and Erie County sheriff's cruisers were parked outside as deputies and officers looked over the area. Detectives executed a search warrant and recovered a revolver they believe to be the murder weapon. Lewis was found several hours later in Margaretta Township and arrested by Sandusky police and Erie County sheriff's deputies. The dog that allegedly attacked Murphy is a pet belonging to residents at the house, Oliver said. As of late Friday, Lewis is locked up in the Erie County Jail. An autopsy is scheduled for next week. Oliver said the investigation is still ongoing. Original post Police investigating death SANDUSKY — Police found a man bloodied in the street with a gunshot wound on Friday, and, shortly thereafter, he died at the hospital. Sandusky police and Erie County sheriff's deputies gathered in the front yard of a Polk Street home to investigate the incident. Just after 1 p.m., officers received reports of a man laying on the road near Polk Street and Hayes Avenue, Sandusky police Chief Jared Oliver said. The man was found with bite wounds in addition to the gunshot. The man, found in the 600 block of Polk St., had injuries from an apparent dog attack and was taken Firelands Regional Medical Center. The man died at the hospital. "Detectives are on scene at a residence executing a search warrant to obtain additional evidence," Oliver said early Friday afternoon.
