Huron grad Cody Thompson makes NFL regular season debut

Huron High School grad Cody Thompson made his NFL regular season debut Sunday in the Seattle Seahawks' 30-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Thompson took the field on the game's very first play in Minneapolis. He was part of the Seahawks' kickoff return team. The wide receiver Thompson didn't record any official stats during the game, as he wasn't targeted on offense and wasn't involved in any special teams tackles. Thompson played 11 snaps, all on special teams. Seattle needed additional receiver help for Sunday's game in part because rookie wideout D'Wayne Eskridge, a second-round pick, was out with a concussion. The Seahawks announced Thompson's promotion to the active roster Saturday night ahead of the Week 3 matchup at the Vikings. Thompson entered Sunday having never played a regular season NFL snap. The promotion from the practice squad for Thompson was thanks to a rule introduced in the 2020 season that allows teams to bring two players up to the active roster before a game. The promoted players revert to the practice squad after the contest, so Thompson will likely begin Week 4 back with Seattle's practice squad. Thompson was originally signed into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Toledo in 2019 when the Chiefs brought him aboard. Most of Thompson's NFL career has been spent on Seattle's practice squad. Pro Football Reference lists just one prior NFL player from Huron High School — Bill Slyker, who caught a touchdown in his only NFL game for the Evansville Crimson Giants in 1922.
