Huron's Cody Thompson named to Seahawks practice squad

A day after being waived Tuesday by the Seattle Seahawks, Huron grad Cody Thompson was named to that team's practice squad on Wednesday. Thompson has been with the Seahawks' practice squad since midway through the 2019 season. A wide receiver, Thompson was one of 14 players named to Seattle's initial group out of a possible 16 spots. The Seahawks signed four wideouts to their practice squad, including Thompson, along with Penny Hart, Aaron Fuller and Cade Johnson. It makes sense for Seattle to retain a hefty group of pass-catchers after only keeping four wide receivers on their initial 53-man roster, which was announced Tuesday. After being waived, other teams had 24 hours to put a possible claim in on Thompson before he could be placed on Seattle's practice squad. The 2021 season will be Thompson's third in the NFL. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chiefs out of Toledo in 2019, then spent time on Kansas City and Cincinnati's practice squads before linking up with the Seahawks, where he's been since. Thompson has yet to play in a regular season NFL game. This preseason, Thompson caught two passes for 21 yards. During the 2021 NFL season, teams are allowed to call up two players from the practice squad to the active game-day roster up to 90 minutes before kickoff. Those players then revert back to the practice squad afterward. Practice squad players are set to make $9,200 per week in 2021, up from $8,400 last season. Teams are allowed to pay more than that rate. A player on one practice squad is eligible to sign with another team's 53-man roster, although each club gets to protect four practice squad players each week.
