Huron's Thompson misses Seahawks' 53-man roster

The Seattle Seahawks trimmed roster to 53 players on Tuesday afternoon, and Cody Thompson wasn't on the list. The Huron grad was vying for one of the final spots on Seattle's roster, but he didn't make the team as a sixth or seventh wide receiver. The Seahawks officially waived Thompson to remove him from their preseason roster. Reports indicate that Seattle hopes Thompson will make it through waivers and be added back to the team's practice squad, which he's spent time on each of the past two seasons. Players waived ahead of the roster cut deadline are eligible to be claimed by other teams through 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 1. After that, teams can begin to sign players to their 16-player practice squads. Seattle featured four locks ahead of Thompson on the WR depth chart: Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, D'Wayne Eskridge and Freddie Swain. The Seahawks opted not to keep Penny Hart, Thompson, Aaron Fuller or Cade Johnson, although they may be hoping to get a few of them through to the practice squad. Thompson, who attended Toledo after starring at Huron and is listed at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, has yet to appear in an NFL game. Across three preseason games this year, Thompson caught two passes for 21 yards in addition to one long catch down the seam brought back for a penalty away from the play. Out of Toledo, Thompson was initially an undrafted free agent signee of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. He also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. In 2021, two practice squad players will be eligible for promotion to the gameday roster each week, with the moves allowed up to 90 minutes before kickoff. Practice squad players will make $9,200 per week this season, up from $8,400 a week in 2020.
