Local sailor killed in Afghanistan

BERLIN HEIGHTS — A local man serving in Afghanistan died Thursday in explosions outside the Kabul airport where the military is working to evacuate Americans and Afghan citizens who helped in the occupation of the country over the last two decades. A notice forwarded to the Register from the school district states: "Max Soviak, a 2017 Edison graduate was killed in Afghanistan from the attack at the Kabul airport." Soviak was a medic in the U.S. Navy, the notice said. The United States Navy issued a news release Friday, "Sailor Among Those Killed in Kabul Attack." "One Sailor was killed during the August 26 attack at the Abbey gate of Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul. We mourn the loss of this Sailor and we offer our deepest condolences to the loved ones of our fallen shipmate. The name of the Sailor will be released 24 hours after notification of next of kin," the news release said. According to his resume, Soviak was a Class of 2017 graduate of Edison High School, where he was on the honor roll and played football. He also had earned a two-year certificate in electrical technology from EHOVE Career Center. Soviak worked as a lifeguard at Castaway Bay and as a maintenance technician at Alarming Concepts in Sandusky and at Hartland Mechanical in Norwalk. * Check back here for updates as they become available.
